I am continually amazed by this stuff. I got this shot into my spine almost 3 weeks ago. Within 3 days of getting the shot I was off pain killers for the first time in almost a year.

A week later I almost threw out my back lifting a 2x4 that was stuck under some other boards and was fine a few days later. Last Wednesday evening, with Katriona's help, I lifted the Stick welder into the truck. As I lifted, I felt my back go "pop, pop, pop". It was exactly how it felt when I ruptured it 3.5 years ago. By Thursday morning I was taking 2 vicodin every 4 hours along with alchohol in the evenings to get through the pain. I started to talk to Katriona about missing Lilies and WW, cause I was sure that I was going to need surgery again.....The pain began to fade on Saturday evening. This morning, I was pain free.....This stuff rocks!!!! It hurt a bit by the end of the day but I am getting a another shot on Thursday morning that should take care of that. I am told this stuff lasts about 6-8 months!!!

I need to recalibrate my pain threshold so I know where to stop, but still!

    This is totally cool!!!

    Viking Faering ....and other stuff
Karen and Ingus....I am not immune to mocking....I appreciate a good mocking...It's ignorant mocking that I frown about. Katriona says I should not write the person who said that you can only be a pacifist if the military protects you...I really REALLY want to write him........and say mean things....would that be considered agression?

Ingus...this is Karen.....Most likely my oldest friend...who I haven't seen in ages, but knows enough about my past to make anyone uncomfortable.
Karen....This is Ingus....a good friend that I don't see nearly enough of....He can pick up and move a 262 lb anvil and can make up really believable Norse Mythology.

ALL: The plan is thus. When the Anchor seal arrives, I will trim the logs into very rough shape with the chain saw. This should take one or two days if I have help. I am thinking of doing this either next weekend or on Thanksgiving Friday. I'll beg for help closer to the day. Once the forms are roughed out, I will start trimming them with a carving blade attached to 10,000 rpm hand grinder. All final finishing must be done with hand tools.

The plan is to take this slowly. I will work on the keelstems all winter and spring at events, while watching TV, etc. I figure that it will about a year. I hope to finish the keelstems sometime next fall..Sometime around next September, I will build/buy a shed to keep the forms in. I think the storage shed could be converted to house the boat construction if the stuff in it could be organized better.....Katriona has given permission to purchase one of those Portable Garage's that G' loaned us for the winter carnival last year.....The problem is that it would have to stay up all winter and I don't think one of those puppies would survive three years outside in Minnesota......Once the shed is ready I will order the wood for the planks and while the wood is being readied I will make the forms around which the boat will be built. The planks should arrive in early Spring of 2008. Then the planking begins. That should take another year. Onces the planking is done, the forms will removed and the boat will be flipped over and secured so various interior things can be added: The rudder, the sail supports, oar locks, benches, etc.....and then stain, and lots of modern epoxy resin clear coat...This baby is gonna last a long time.....and then we all go boating!!!!

    whew!!!!

    Viking Faering
    THE LOGS HAVE ARRIVED!

Many on this list know of my desire to build a Viking Faering, a four oared, 21 ft. clinker built, row boat (not a Longship). The full sized plans arrived in September.

The ends of this boat are made from logs carved to fit the planks, which are riveted to the ends. I ordered the logs about a year ago. The owner of the mill cut down the Whte Oak tree 3 weeks ago and then his tractor broke down and he couldn't get the things (5 ft long, 24 inch inches in diameter, 500 lbs each) out of the woods. He fixed his tractor and I went to pick up the logs this last Sunday!!!!! Carving will start in few days!!!! I am waiting to get a 5 gallon barrel of something called Anchor Seal. I was told if I keep the logs sealed as I carve them, they shouldn't split. My plan is to rough them out over the course of a few weeks. I will seal the wood at the end of each carving session, once or twice a day. Once they a roughed out, Katriona has given me permission to carve them in the basement so they don't freeze.

Anyone who wants to swing an axe should drop me an email. :)

    Cool Video
I just got sent this link for a video about The Inner Life of a Cell. It was so totally cool I had to change my lesson plans so that I could show it to my students.

It is a Flash 8 file. It is worth checking out...seriously....
